There are a handful of individuals within the global vegan community who, when they’re drawing attention to something – something I’d rather ignore – I have to check myself and ask: What else don’t I know?
Vegan Psychologist, author and animal rights activist Clare Mann is one such individual.
Today I’m excited to share with you my third conversation with Clare in which we’ll explore the increasingly hard to ignore friction and outright hostility currently evident within a community that is supposedly founded on compassion for all living beings. There’s nothing more frustrating than seeing vegans attack each other.
Does it come from fear? Ego? A desire for power and money? A need to be right? Perhaps as a result of the high standards we expect of each other given we have in common an ethical commitment to avoid animal exploitation?
For a little official bio: Clare Mann is an Australian-based psychologist, existential psycho-therapist, best-selling author, speaker and communications trainer. She consults with people worldwide to help address the personal and social challenges of being vegan and living in a non-vegan world. Back in E538 I chatted with Clare about her book, Vystopia: the anguish of being vegan in a non-vegan world and then again in E630 we dug in with her book, The Myths of Choice: Why People Won’t Change and What You Can Do About It.
I highly recommend both books. As I’m sure you’ll see in todays conversation Clare has a knack for both knowing what the vegan and animals rights activist community are struggling with and creating the resources to help us negotiation the constantly evolving and easily overwhelming horrors of being vegan in a seemingly apathetic, greedy and will-fully ignorant non-vegan world.
In this conversation we cover:
- Clare’s suggestions to help combat the gap people who have relied on face-to-face interactions for their outreach and social community might be feeling in their lives.
- Intense polarisation of global issues have driven a wedge within the vegan community: What’s the truth so far as the current state of our community?
- What can we do as individuals to help? What should we avoid?
- The opportunity to examine these challenges in a new light, creating a positive impact on both people and activism.
- Second stage Vystopia: What else don’t we know?
- The problem with making other vegans and animal rights activists “hero’s” or “celebrities”.
- Clare’s current strategy / tips for effectively handling social media.
If this conversation made you want to spend more time with Clare I understand completely and I’ll have you all linked up below so far as her books, online trainings and previous podcast interviews with me.
