For 4 years, Georgie Purcell worked as Chief of Staff to Victoria’s first Animal Justice Party MP – Andy Meddick, playing a key role in achieving legislative reform to better the lives of animals.
However after entering a political role at just 26 years old, Georgie was disappointed to see how young women are not represented in our halls of power. She is committed to changing that.
Georgie is now a Member of the Victorian Parliament Legislative Council, proudly representing the Animal Justice Party in Northern Victoria and by boldly sharing her personal experiences and expertise is already forging a path for others to follow.
Georgie holds a double degree in law and communications/politics, has been admitted as an Australian lawyer, and is a graduate of the Pathway to Politics Program for Women and Centre for Australian Progress.
She has been involved in the animal protection movement for 11 years – volunteering on campaigns to end puppy farming, ban jumps racing and stop duck shooting. These, in addition to implementing Veticare, ending greyhound racing, rehoming brumbies and investing in climate-resilient agriculture and plant-based protein are just some of her priorities in Parliament.
Georgie’s warmth and fierce passion shine through in this interview and in all she does. Please enjoy this conversation with the Animal Justice Party’s Georgie Purcell about Saving Animals Through Political Action.
In this conversation we cover:
- Georgie’s vegan journey after first becoming vegetarian at 4 in a small farming town.
- The way young people, especially young women, are not represented in government and Georgie’s hope to help change that.
- How Georgie first came to hear of and become a member of the Animal Justice Party (AJP).
- Is politics starting to change in terms of politicians working together and finding common ground instead of just “going to war”?
- Georgie worked as a topless waiter while at Uni and photos were leaked. How did that impact her mental health?
- Now what would she say to the individual who thinks something they have done in the past might hold them back in their future goals?
- The failures of our existing animal welfare legislation.
- Georgie’s thoughts on tightening Ag Gag laws.
- Common misconceptions in relation to animal welfare legislation.
- The campaign for a permanent ban on duck shooting.
- The campaign to re-home Brumbies.
- Some of the ex puppy farm dogs Georgie shares her home with!
As this goes live I have a disappointing update on the campaign for a permanent ban on duck shooting in Australia’s progressive state, Victoria.
Shockingly, to quote Georgie: Despite the overwhelming community sentiment, the science and the government’s own inquiry recommendation, the Government has permitted the ongoing massacre of native ducks.
As you can imagine, this has only stocked the fire in Georgie to continue the fight.
Hearing news like this can be disheartening, it can also force more of us to take action. AJP is Australia’s only political party dedicated to protecting all animals. However its very existence and the WINS you can check out via animaljusticeparty.org are there to give hope and heart to animal advocates all around the world.
