In todays conversation with Faunalytics’ Research Scientist Andrea Polanco we discuss the findings of a new study showing how successful various animal advocacy types are across both the short and long term.
Plant friends, if you’re yet to hear of Faunalytics it is an amazing online resource and not for profit with the mission to empower animal advocates with access to research, analysis, strategies and messages that maximise their effectiveness to reduce animal suffering.
In E702 I chatted to Jo Anderson, PhD, Research Director at Faunalytics about Empowering Animal Advocates. If you’re fascinated by stats and research you’ll love the work team Faunalytics undertake and if you’re less inclined towards all that analysis (like me) you’ll likely be grateful there’s a whole team out there doing the work for you!
Basically: Faunalytics saves animals by helping advocates be as effective as possible.
Back to todays conversation with Andrea, the time in this high energy conversation flew and give me valuable insights to contemplate. Most importantly the impact of identity in how likely an individual is to make changes to their diet.
As hesitant as some of us animals rights activists might be to the warm, welcoming, “move at your own pace” messaging of – reducetarians, Meat-less Mondays, flexitarians even vegetarians – the research shows, these individuals are the ones that are receptive to our animal advocacy. They are the low hanging fruit to be embraced and supported.
I’ll give you the heads up right now, the findings on meat eaters in relation to animal advocacy and diet are VERY disappointing. We’ll get to that!
First, a little official bio: After completing a BA in psychology from Ryerson University Andrea wanted to learn more about the emotional lives of other animals.
As a result, she holds a MSc and PhD in animal welfare science from the University of Guelph, and her research on abnormal behaviours as indicators of affective states has been published in peer-reviewed journals. Andrea became a vocal animal activist during her PhD, organising demonstrations and slaughterhouse vigils.
Her advocacy led her to discovering Faunalytics, where she served as a volunteer science writer prior to her Research Scientist position.
Ok lets discuss the Impact of Different Animal Advocacy Tactics On Diet with Faunalytics’ Andrea Polanco.
In the interview we cover:
- Is there a difference between the type of advocacy that is effective short term and that which is effective long term?
- Are Meat-eaters’ diets affected positively by any forms of advocacy? What can we learnt from the forms of advocacy that had are negative impact?
- Protests showed inconsistent but troubling backfire effects for both meat-eaters and meat-avoiders. A) Possible reasons for the backfire effects. B) Animal rights protests not effective with consumers however it likely is helpful for participants and does it put any pressure on industry / government?
- Educational information about animal welfare labels didn’t change people’s intentions to purchase animal products with or without a welfare label. Why does Andrea suspect this is case?
- Was Andrea surprised by any of the results.
- What would Andrea like to be able to test and haven’t yet.
- We also touch on this study, Approval of Undercover Farm Investigations. HINT: the findings are encouraging!

Beyond that there’s an abundance of actionable information on: effective advocacy, animals in science, wildlife, animals for food, companion animals and more to be explored via faunalytics.org and I hugely recommend the site.
To quote faunalytics.org: Animals need you, and you need data. We conduct essential research, maintain an online research library, and directly support advocates and organisations in their work to save lives.
