It is a true pleasure and privilege to share this conversation with the warm, generous and relentlessly purpose over profits focused, Seth Tibbott, founder and chairman of The Tofurky Company.
We discuss how Seth pivoted from his passion for “mouldy soy beans” and succeeded – eventually – against all the odds, in creating the wildly successful and impactful Tofurky Company.
Despite the doubters, and set-backs Seth had a vision and as he shares, a lot of people were kind.
Seth’s vision still holds true. To quote tofurky.com:
Our vision is a thriving planet, a generation of people embracing friendlier eating, and a business that is contributing to society rather than taking from it.
In this interview we cover:
- The beginnings of Seth’s becoming vegan story.
- The evolution of Tofurky.
- At one point Seth looked for a way out of his non-profitable business.
- How and why Seth made the pivot from tempeh to tofu…and become a global phenomenon.
- How Seth and Tofurky have stayed true to his belief in eco-friendly practices.
- The importune of focusing on purpose over profits.
- Keeping control of your company and keeping the business in the family.
- Seth’s advice to vegan start ups.
- 40+ years on our vegan food options are HUGELY improved, is anything about the lifestyle more challenging in Seth’s mind?
How powerfully true and hopeful is the quote that Seth shared, “first they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win”
The pressure of “pay to play” in grocery stores is evidence we are in the “then they fight you” phase. As is the global battles over labelling of products and the NOT in good conscience claims that consumers might be confused by the terms oat “milk” or plant-based “cheese.”
It’s going to take a massive, consistent focused effort from vision driven vegan business’s large and small. And from individual passionate and compassionate vegan consumers and activists. As Seth stated so eloquently:
Don’t give up. It’s a long haul. This is one of the biggest changes that the world has ever seen leaving animal agriculture…
We got this. We rise together. We’re going to make this happen.
