This is a conversation about, how YOU can save more lives and make the biggest difference for animals and the planet. Robert Cheeke’s new book, The Impactful Vegan, applies the principles of effective altruism to animal advocacy work to determine how to do the most good for animals.
I found the insights Robert shared confronting and you might too.
However after reading The Impactful Vegan. On hearing from the many respected experts Robert spoke to and following the evidence and the data – it is abundantly clear that some vegan activism is ineffective and that some vegan altruism is VASTLY more impactful.
It can be tough to understand that just because a specific form of vegan activism “worked” on you to “convert” you, it might not be effective for the majority of people.
If you care deeply about animal suffering it can be overwhelming to know what to do.
It certainly is disheartening when forward progress globally and habit change among the people you love most is frustratingly slow. Robert’s evidence-based research is not only inspiring, it is actionable.
Please enjoy this conversation about becoming a more Impactful Vegan with Robert Cheeke.
In this conversation we cover:
- What effective vegan altruism is and HOW it differs from what we might be inclined to do?
- How do we determine how to do the most good for animals?
- In what ways have Robert’s biases impacted his vegan activism? What has he changed his mind about so far as impactful activism after writing the book?
- What would Robert say to the activist who is stuck “following their heart / what is right” without focusing on what is most effective?
- Some examples of impactful advocacy. Including: Innovation in alternative proteins. Also: Reducing recidivism from veganism.
- The Animal rights movement has been around for 60 years us v them does not work.
- In early years of Animal Rights people were vegan for the animals. The vegan movement has morphed into a diet and lifestyle campaign… as activists we need to meet people where they are.
- The vegan kaizen system of taking small, incremental steps rather than an all-or-nothing approach.
We covered a lot in that conversation however there is much more waiting for you in The Impactful Vegan.
I found immense value in hearing from many of the vegans I hold in high regard. Understanding how they think and what attitude they embody to have huge impact.
I want to leave the last words to Paul Shapiro, who as Robert mentioned co-founded and runs, The Better Meat Co which uses fermentation to create a more sustainable and humane method of satisfying our taste for meat than raising and slaughtering animals for food:
“Too many vegans act like being right is sufficient for animals; that if we just made stronger arguments, or had better statistics, we could be more effective. But humans are often irrational, and we don’t tend to base our behavior on logic. Rather, we do what we enjoy and what we think will enhance our status within our social group.”
