To transform today’s youth into the humane leaders of tomorrow who advocate for and work towards an equitable future for all living beings and the planet.
That, is the mission of LEAP (Leaders for Ethics, Planet, and Animals) and today I welcome co-founder, Danielle Hanosh back to the podcast to share some of the incredibly exciting initiative’s and partnerships the non-profit is working on.
LEAP is one of those organisations that give me hope. A small, passionate team with huge goals and an impressive impact. The type, I find myself consciously seeking out in an effort to filter in good news, in a time when there is a lot of heavy, terrifying news that it would be really easy to get stuck in.
Even better, as you will hear, there is increasing collaboration between like minded groups to learn from and celebrate. Beyond a growing number of animal sanctuary partners Danielle has also joined forces with PETA Kids and We Animals Photojournalism.
The result? Kids getting an opportunity to embrace the natural love and compassion for animals we are born with, rather than being indoctrinated into the belief system that, some animals are friends and some animals are food.
Beyond that? The broader focus of LEAP and their partners recognises our detrimental impact on the environment and explores the potential for human economy’s to benefit from the conservation of the environment rather than the exploitation of the environment.
Danielle also shares the most fascinating story of, a human built bridge to help Orangutan’s get across a river, that has led to starving crocodiles now attacking humans.
It exemplifies our tendency to disrupt the natural balance of nature, and then create new problems in our band-aid approach to a quick fix solution.
In this conversation we cover:
- 2024 saw the expansion of LEAP animal sanctuary partners into several new states. Danielle shares a her experience growing the program with new sanctuaries.
- We touch on some of the wins from 2024.
- Danielle visited Borneo and the Galapagos Islands on conservation centred educational trips in 2024. How did those opportunities eventuate?
- The environmental effects of palm oil sourcing, and the sad story of separated Orangutan’s, smart monkeys and starving crocodiles.
- Integrating findings into the LEAP curriculum with lesson plans that centre the impact that plant-based living can have on global ecosystems?
- The 2025 launch of LEAP Kids for 6th-8th grade students with a brand-new curriculum adapted from the original LEAP program for high schoolers.
- The plans for further outreach with kindergarten to 5th grade students.
- LEAP is collaborating with photojournalists WeAnimals to go behind-the-scenes at a few of the program’s sanctuary partners.
- How did the collaboration come together and what is it hoping to achieve?
- The challenges (and successes) of being a female entrepreneur and nonprofit founder running an animal sanctuary.
If you are new to Danielle and LEAP you can learn about the organisations powerful origin story in E864.
I feel like we only just touched on the exciting ways Danielle is expanding the LEAP program.
