Most vegans have had the same hopeful thought at some point:
“If people just knew what I know… they’d change.”
Sadly it rarely works like that.
There’s a moment — where you realise the colossal scale of exploitation, suffering and death… you can’t un-see it, and yet the people dearest to you? They choose ignorance with volition. Or they see it… and dismiss it.
Clare Mann calls this anguish of living in a non-vegan world: Vystopia.
So what if that frustration, that overwhelm, that “burden of knowing”… could actually become your greatest strength?
In this episode, I’m joined again by my dear friend Clare Mann — vegan psychologist and author of Vystopia — to break down why people resist, what’s really going on beneath the surface, and how to turn that energy into powerful, effective communication people don’t resist… they lean into.
-
How do we reframe Vystopia and the “burden of knowing” into something empowering?
-
Mastering Three Essential Elements:
-
Many vegans feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and isolated – how does that typically show up in conversations without them realising?
-
A lot of people try to model communicators they admire – why can that backfire?
-
The value in identifying the Values Bridge in conversation and how to use it.
-
If someone feels anxious or triggered, how can they still communicate effectively?
-
Trance-breaking strategies.
-
Why do some people speak and others lean in – what are we picking up on?
There’s something really powerful about Clare’s approach… she doesn’t ask you to be less of who you are.
Simply to bring more awareness to it.
To take that grief, that frustration, that fire you feel… and instead of letting it isolate you, to let it shape how you show up.
Because the truth is—being right isn’t what changes people.
Being understood… and helping others feel understood… is where influence begins.
I have so much gratitude for Clare—not just for her work, also for the way she continues to show up in this space—with such depth, honesty, and care.
If this episode resonated with you, maybe the takeaway isn’t to say more… or push harder.
Maybe it’s to pause.
To listen more deeply.
To trust that how you show up in these conversations matters just as much—if not more—than the words you choose.
And that this “burden of knowing”… might actually be the very thing that allows you to connect, to influence, and to create change in a way that has lasting impact.
