For the past few years award winning journalist Henry Mance has been on a journey to question: What might it mean to live in a society that took animals seriously and that looked at our actions through their eyes. The result, his debut book: How to Love Animals In a Human-Shaped World.
Henry Mance is Chief Features Writer at the Financial Times. He was named ‘Interviewer of the Year’ at the 2017 British Press Awards, and his work has also appeared in the Guardian, GQ, Tatler and Aeon.
This conversation was such a joy. Henry is a unique, rational and powerful voice for the vegan movement and I trust How to Love Animals In a Human-Shaped World will reach a large and diverse audience and reveal that for most of us veganism aligns to our existing beliefs.
It requires no big change of values and more-so an aligning of actions with your existing values.
In this conversation we cover:
- Henry’s personal story of coming to understand the disconnect in saying you love animals when you still eat animals.
- The research Henry did for How to Love Animals. Including a job at a slaughter house and a pig farm.
- As a young journalist Henry was able to carve a space for himself writing about animals at The FT.
- Nothing should unite animal rights activists and conservationists as much as veganism.
- The positive impact swapping government subsidies from animal products to plant-based products would have.
- The importance of telling our children the truth about our relationship with animals.
One of the points that Henry empathises in the book is that, Pets matter. I think most humans agree here.
And yet sadly as he points out, “they are the exception to how we treat animals” when really to again quote Mance,
“We have to make sure our pets are the beginning of our love for animals not the end.”
Needless to say I hugely recommend How to Love Animals In a Human-Shaped World. It’s an ideal present for the individuals in your life that cling to a disappointingly small circle of compassion when it come to animals.
Perhaps those friends or family members that are not receptive to hearing about the ethics and un-sustainability of animal agriculture when it comes from YOU who might just appreciate the logic and compassion in the message a very non-stereotypical vegan is sharing in this book.
No generation has loved animals more than us. No generation has kept more of them in factory farms, or pushed more of them towards extinction. Can we find a better way? @henrymance #friendsnotfood Share on XTo connect with Henry online I have you all linked in the show notes below.
