Farm Transitions Australia was born out of founder Krystal Camilleri’s experience rescuing unwanted male calves, slated for slaughter, from Tasmanian dairy farms.
Over three years, Krystal delved into the heart of the farming community, gaining invaluable insight into farmers’ challenges.
Spending time with the farmers filled Krystal with compassion for the humans that are also often stuck within our broken food system.
Farmers are experiencing rising operation costs, labour shortages, impacts from flood and drought, and changing consumer preferences. When you combine those stressors with the isolation and long working hours necessary to survive on the land, it is no wonder that farmers’ mental health and wellbeing suffers.
The team at Farm Transitions Australia are committed to providing a practical pathway forward for farmers interested in transitioning out of animal agriculture.
This is a topic so huge it could languish in the too hard basket. And yet, it is too important to be relegated to too hard. Ethically. Environmentally. Socially. Financially.
RethinkX anticipates a 70% decline in milk products by 2030.
RethinkX (also) anticipates precision fermentation protein will be 10 times cheaper than traditional animal proteins by 2035.
The writing is on the wall, and vegan friends, farmers need our support.
In this conversation we cover:
- The Farm Transitions Australia origin story.
- Farm Transitions Australia has a three-pronged approach.
- Farm transitions and farmer support
- Advocacy, public awareness campaigns and education
- Relationships and collaboration with likeminded organisations
- The challenges in Australia putting pressure on beef and dairy farmers to adapt.
- Farm transitions internationally – is anywhere doing it well, yet?
- FTA’s inaugural project, working with a New South Wales beef farmer to transition a 3800-acre farm and herd of 1000 cattle into an agritourism model.
- The importance of open, supportive and respectful communication between animal rights activists and animal farmers.
- How you can help Farm Transitions Australia build a food system where values and business interests can work together.
If you found that to be part hopeful and inspiring and part incredibly overwhelming then I would remind us both that the solution to overwhelm is to take action while only focusing on what you can control. If you, or someone you know is in a position to support FTA, AMAZING.
Though also, visibility is hugely impactful and amplifying the message of an organisation you support is free. Something I am looking to get back at is sharing the work of people I respect. As individuals, charities and mission focused small business owners we cannot do it alone.
Irrespective of how willing we are to work ourselves into the ground for a worthy, urgent cause.
