My guest today Vegucator Dawn Hilton-Williams has a passion for the everyday work of radicalising wellness – especially within disproportionately impacted communities. By that I mean communities such as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) who suffer the negative health consequences often in the form of deadly yet avoidable chronic disease of a SAD diet at an even higher rate than other communities of people.
Dawn is all about creating what she calls: Health Wealth.
She does this as a cookbook author, founder of Herban Eats, co-founder of the charitable organisation, Power Is Giving Inc. and also via EDD summits (that stands for: eat drink disrupt which I love the sound of!)
I found this chat to be such a joy. Dawn is incredibly warm and welcoming… I felt safe to ask any question and I think you’ll find our conversation benefits from this.
In this conversation we cover:
- Why Dawn decided to adopt a plant based lifestyle and how that has changed her (and her husband’s) life.
- The direct correlation between chronic disease and diet, especially people in minority communities.
- How the stereo typical white female animal rights activist is ignorant to / could get better at when communicating the vegan message in disproportionately impacted communities.
- Dawn’s cookbook, “Flava My Plate-your tasty vegan guide to health-wealth” and her tips for the “non chef” or “new vegan” wanting to up their cooking game.
- The Covid 19 and Food Apartheid Relief efforts.
- Dawn’s charitable organisation, Power Is Giving Inc and specifically the 1/2 day vegan culinary boot camp.
- What Dawn wishes she knew prior to being vegan.
Something I find so very hopeful in both this conversation and in the work Dawn is doing, is that health wealth is not dependent on financial wealth.
Absolutely it does require access to education and the availability of whole plants foods however surely these are obstacles that can be overcome? When the benefits are substantial and indisputable, both in the form of individual health outcomes and to our nations via drastically reduced reactive medical spending… well you’d think it’d be a no-brainer to make education and plant foods easily accessible?
Unless, of course there was gigantic profit to be made by keeping people sick and medicated.
I guess that’s where we have to relay on, share and spread the work and mission of Vegucator’s such as Dawn.
A healthy vegan does not need to live on organic kale, berries and activated nuts OR processed vegan cheeses, milks and meat replacements.
The cheapest foods need not be fast-food-animal-exploitation-based crap-o-la. They can in fact be beans, lentils, potatoes and rice.
As I’ve said before we humans seem to have an inclination to complicate simple decisions and actions.
When really all we need to do is start where we’re at. Just as my clients don’t need to wait till the best vegan cheese or cultured plant based meat option is available at their local store so too can any of us start at the very next meal with a simple substitute or few.
