This is such a high energy and hopeful conversation on a shift to sustainable plant-based agriculture. For a few years I’ve been aware of the huge benefits, to animals, to human health and of course to the environment of veganic farming and yet, I was not sure of how it might actually work.
How realistic is it to remove both all chemical inputs AND all animal inputs and exploitation? How productive? How scalable? How financially feasible?
Veganic farmer, activist, consultant, and researcher Jimmy Videle a paints beautiful, incredibly appealing picture of how it might work.
With small scale veganic farms.
Jimmy has been a consultant, researcher, and volunteer with A.U.M. Films (producers of Cowspiracy and What the Health), Humane Party, USA, and the Animal Protection Party, Canada. He lives with his wife, Melanie Bernier, and five rescue cats on the small-scale veganic market farm, La Ferme de l’Aube in Boileau, Québec.
He has been growing his own food and homesteading for over twenty-five years and became a professional full-time organic farmer in 2005. From 2010-2014 he worked and consulted on eleven vegan, organic, and permaculture farms throughout Hawaii, Mexico, Central America, South America, and Québec before settling at his current home in 2014.
Please enjoy this conversation about a shift towards a more compassionate, sustainable food system with veganic farmer Jimmy Videle.
In this conversation we cover:
- Jimmy’s journey to veganic growing. Also, What is veganic?
- In 1997 Jimmy saw his first CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operation).
- In 2013 Kip Anderson, sent Jimmy an email asking: “Do you know about veganic gardening?”
- What consumers need to know about the inputs that go into traditional organic produce.
- All manure comes from enslaved animals AND the only reason we use this much manure is we have so much of it.
- In Oct 2014 “Farm of the First Light” (La Ferme de l’Aube) was born.
- The productivity of veganic farming.
- How we might attract more young people to veganic agriculture.
- Jimmy believes that small scale farms (one acre or less) are the key to the future reparation of our planet.
- Jimmy’s book: Veganic Grower’s Handbook and the benefits to veganic growing.
I genuinely cannot imagine a more passionate and positive advocate for a veganic future than Jimmy. This energy and enthusiasm shines through in his book, where he shares the lessons he has learnt producing a huge amount of food, on half an acre.
It is important to note, as a conventional grower, Jimmy did not believe it was possible to grow without chemical fertilisers.
As an organic grower, he did not believe it was possible to grow without farmyard manure.
it was a journey for Jimmy and it’s a growing voyage he can guide you on in his book the Veganic Grower’s Handbook where he provides the tools, techniques, and insight into food cultivation from seeding to harvest, while wisely considering the totality of Earth’s inhabitants.
