John Lewis AKA The Badass Vegan is not your stereotypical vegan.
Side-note: I will be ecstatic when there is no longer such a thing as a stereotypical vegan! Back to John, he’s six-foot-six, African American, has the build of a guy who played Division 1 college basketball… and he hasn’t had any animal protein in fifteen years.
Importantly John’s approach to spreading the vegan message, while “Badass” is also fun and low pressure.
John’s book, Badass Vegan: Fuel Your Body, Ph*ck the System, and Live Your Life Right, is:
A “wake you up” manifesto and plant-based lifestyle plan to buck the system that keeps us fat, sick, and tired.
Via both the book and his daily actions, John embodies his message that: You can be cool and still be Vegan.
In this conversation we discuss some of the most powerful take aways from Badass Vegan – the book and the man.
I love his unique and valuable advice: “Going plant based is a lot like starting a new relationship— you gotta keep things exciting and a little sexy.”
We also touch on John’s first feature length documentary focused on food and social justice, They’re Trying to Kill Us.
Co-directed with the amazing Keegan Kuhn of What The Health fame, this joint venture dares to share the facts so far as:
The singular most deadly threat to American society that mainstream media doesn’t want to talk about.
This story of collusion that has kept millions of US Americans sick, while the industries responsible make billions of dollars is likely depressingly familiar especially if you listened to my recent chat with The Invisible Vegan’s, Jasmine C. Leyva.
Please enjoy this conversation about Escaping The System That keeps Us Fat, Sick, and Tired with The Badass Vegan, John Lewis.
In this conversation we discuss:
- John’s personal journey to veganism and to helping others take control of their health.
- How John’s approach to spreading the vegan message has evolved over the years.
- Badass Vegan: Fuel Your Body, Ph*ck the System, and Live Your Life Right.
- Advice for the first 30 days of going plant-based and how it is a lot like starting a new relationship!
- The MINDSET component of health + fitness and how we can be, mentally prepared to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
- Food injustice. How our broken food system still disproportionately negatively impacts communities of colour.
- The documentary, They’re Trying to Kill Us.
Wherever you live, whatever your background I know it can be easy to feel like a prisoner of a broken health care system and a victim of systemic racism in the form of food injustice.
The medications so many of us – so many of our loved ones – are reliant on are not designed to cure your disease. Rather they are designed to manage it, while making massive profit for Big Pharma.
Via the Badass Vegan book John steps us through from, Step 1: Wake the Fuck Up where we truely must connect with our compelling Why to the equally vital and often overlooked, Step 4: Making It Last.
Whether you are vegan curious for your health, for the planet, for your fellow humans or for the animals, you do not need to wait for government and industry to catch up and legislate in favour of the foods that make you Fit, Healthy and Energized.
The individual actions on one person DO COUNT. Especially for that one person and for the loved ones they interact with.
Happily individual eating actions need not be boring, bland or restrictive. They can be fun, delicious and abundant. Additionally, many of the 80+ recipes in Badass Vegan came together when John was dead broke! So budget is not a prohibitive factor.
