Registered Dietician Ginny Messina has devoted her career to giving people the tools and knowledge they need to adopt a healthy vegan diet and to ensure that they will stay healthy and happy for the long term.
In her latest book, co-authored with Carol J. Adams: “Protest Kitchen: Fight Injustice, Save the Planet, and Fuel Your Resistance One Meal at a Time”
Ginny looks at veganism as both an act of resistance to challenge the rise of repressive and regressive values and also a resource for hope and healing.
Ginny and Carol suggest how your food choices offer “opportunities not just to confront factory farms and environmental destruction, but also to impact misogyny, racism, and injustice”.
This is a whole new take on veganism for me. Even more fuel to be the most passionate ambassador for the movement I possibly can be. (as if more fuel was needed!). I found the ideas expressed in Protest Kitchen both resonated deeply and terrified me.
Thankfully it’s also incredibly heartening to know that every single meal is a way to feel empowered at a time when it’s all too easy to feel disempowered. That change is possible. That each of us can make a difference.

Kate here back on my own and that conversation probably should have gone for 20 hours!!! There was so much to cover. I learnt so much.
I’ve always thought there are so many reasons to go vegan – surely there’s a reason that will be personally compelling for every single human… and then, I have my eyes opened to so many more reasons! The complex issues discussed in Protest Kitchen and indeed over the decades by co-authors Ginny and Carol really do highlight the importance of adopting a more plant based lifestyle as a way live a life of compassion, kindness and decency – to celebrate diversity and to nurture a culture of acceptance and integrity.
These values and this lifestyle are not only for the animal lover. Or the environmentalist. Or the health conscious. They absolutely are the values that any person concerned with any issue of social justice must embrace.
As the authors say “What happens in the kitchen doesn’t stay in the kitchen . . .” and what better way to be a positive, compassionate, inspiring influence on those around you than with the food you create and share?
