Today it’s my absolute pleasure to share with you my conversation with a brave, innovative and fearlessly vocal for the animals Aussie activist, Tash Peterson.
You might know Tash by V-Gan Booty online. Likely you’ve seen some of her individual actions that have garnered huge media coverage, outrage among vegans and non vegans alike and yet also, undeniably have helped shine a spotlight on the atrocities animal agriculture is so desperate to keep hidden.
I’ll lay my cards on the table up front: I support Tash’s approach unequivocally. Even if It’s not my personal preferred form of activism. I’m grateful for individuals like Tash, because we need all types of activists to appeal to all types of non-vegans.
Increasingly I’m certain we need to push harder – slam our hand on the urgency lever – because the non vegans are moving too slowly. The animals are dying, our planet is dying, our fellow humans are dying and so the softly softly approach is really not a luxury we have time for.
Let’s loudly tell them the truth about the atrocities of animal agriculture, today our guide is V-Gan Booty!
In this conversation we cover:
- Tash wasn’t originally a fan of the disruptive direct actions she’s now so effective at.
- The Right To Rescue.
- Dealing with online hate, especially from other vegans.
- The discrepancy between hate directed at female activists v male activists.
- The extra abuse copped as a solo disruptive activist.
- What advice would Tash have loved to receive as a young(er!) activist but didn’t.
- The Tell Them The Truth campaign.
- Animal rights activists getting social media accounts banned.
- Self compassion and Tash’s solutions to stay healthy and positive when the extent of animal exploitation globally can be so daunting.
And so much more!
Friends, if you’re yet to connect with Tash online I really recommend you do. The contrast between the calm, considered sweetheart your just heard and powerful badass warrior for the animals – words all chose with upmost respect (!) is really quite stark and impressive.
Of course she’s there as a supportive role model for other activists interested in solo direct action. And yet also, for those of us not comfortable with putting ourselves so directly in the line of fire one of the very impactful ways we can help is to share her content and support her in the comments.
A couple of learnings perhaps revisited or reinforced for me in this conversation:
It does not matter if you were “the shyest kid in school” (WOW can I relate to that!) when you find a cause important enough you’ll find your voice too.
Also, stay open minded to all forms of activism because that line in the sand so far as what you first judge to be ineffective or overly confrontational might just move and that could very well be a great thing for your personal effectiveness as an activist and of course for the animal.
