In this conversation TheGutHealthMD Dr Will Bulsiewicz and I discuss some of the “unfinished business” from his first best-selling book Fiber Fueled.
Incidentally my first chat in E686 with Dr B for Fiber Fueled is the most downloaded episode of Healthifcation and I understand why.
Gut health is both fascinating and complicated. It could feel overwhelming. And yet Will has a unique talent in speaking to you via his books and podcasts as if you were right there in the room with him having a consult.
Like, your personal gut trainer! With the goal to train your gut to maximise its function and strength. And a vision for the time when you can enjoy ALL the delicious, nutritious foods you might currently feel are off limits or restricted.
Dr B’s latest book is The Fiber Fueled Cookbook: Turbocharge Your Health, Heal Your Food Sensitivities, and Inspire Your Tastebuds With Deeply Flavourful, Satisfying Plant-Based Recipes.
Today we cover the three basic steps for gut healing that Dr B has taken from both his own experience and learned from working with many patients.
We also get our acronym on with the GROWTH Strategy to grow beyond your food intolerances.
It’s a combination of both research based facts and protocols and also – vitally – creating the most supportive and effective mindset to succeed in both gut health and indeed overall health.
In the interview we cover:
- The three basic steps for gut healing.
- How “going into a restrictive diet can fuel the food resistance or food intolerance.”
- Allergies being the response of your immune system to food verses intolerance being digestive symptoms.
- 2 Protocols included in this book— low FODMAP and low histamine.

Not surprisingly that time flew.
We touched on Holistic Healing and there’s a whole chapter dedicated to it where Dr B describes “rising the tide on human health.” Nothing takes place in isolation. Ignoring the health of parts outside the digestive system can hold us back.
He also covers the importance of our emotional relationship with food and how it can impact whether we find pleasure or experience pain when we eat. I relate hugely to this point.
I’m used to the bemused smiles my clients give me when I describe that I love certain foods not just for the way they taste.
Taste is important. However also, you can love a food for the way it makes you feel after you eat it. For the value it gives your body. For the results it helps you achieve. For the energy it gives you. And of course, for the fact that it is aligned with your values and beliefs.
