Erin Wing spent 2 years as undercover investigator for Animal Outlook shining a light on the horrors in facilities that breed and raise animals for food. Erin has certainly seen the worse of what humans do to non-human animals.
She has witnessed first hand what most of us would struggle to glance at via video. And yet the truth that Erin has witnessed and documented needs to be shared. If we were to leave it up to animal agribusiness the atrocities happening to billions of animals every single moment of every single day would be shrouded with lies such as: “humane animal welfare” or meaningless marketing terms like “free-range” and “organic.”
This conversation is for my vegan friends who might be feeling disillusioned and hopeless. It’s for you if you need to know there are good, brave people out there making a difference for animals. Committed to bringing first transparency and then an animal free transformation to our cruel and broken food system.
This is also a conversation to share with that individual in your life who believes “livestock animals” live a life worth living. The individual who accepts the propaganda they are fed along with their grass fed beef, free range eggs and salmon.
I’m happy to say Erin is now Deputy Director of Investigations for Animal Outlook. She has stepped out of the field and is helping other investigators succeed in both getting the footage that can end animal agriculture and also manage their own mental health while involved in a career that most of us would consider too lonely, risky and costly to our well being.
Undercover Investigations is just one vital component of the work Animal Outlook does to change the world for animals.
Animal Outlook is a national nonprofit 501(c)(3) animal advocacy organisation based in Washington, DC and Los Angeles, CA.
Beyond groundbreaking investigations they also focus on Legal Advocacy to strategically challenge the status quo of animal agribusiness, from animal cruelty to misleading marketing and unfair business practices.
Additionally, Animal Outlook have an international Corporate Engagement program pushing for change to reduce suffering, eliminate animal ingredients, and mainstream the availability of plant-based options. And finally, there’s Outreach and Education. To get a better understanding of the huge scope and impact I recommend you check out AnimalOutlook.org after this conversation.
For now, let’s illuminate the hidden darkness of animal agribusiness with undercover investigator Erin Wing.
In this conversation we cover:
- How the adversity and abuse Erin endured in her childhood prepared her for the horrors she witnessed as an undercover investigator.
- Erin’s experiences as an Undercover Investigator at facilities that breed and raise chickens, dairy farms, and in the aquaculture industry.
- Erin’s experience of the other workers. Did spending time with them lead her to feel more or less compassion for them?
- After the isolation you would feel as an investigator how do you then reintegrate back into society? What has Erin learnt to help other investigators so far as self care and mental health?
- In relation to HOPE, Erin has seen the worst in people – does she still have hope?
I know this conversation was at times heavy and heart-breaking. And yet, I trust it also leaves you with both hope and perhaps a renewed passion and commitment to help drive change.
When I look at the footage investigators such as Erin have made available I’m at once sickened yet also grateful to have the resources – the proof – to confidently share with those closest to me who have not yet accepted the brutal, unnatural, unnecessary reality of animal agriculture.
