If you’ve ever felt frustrated by the way animal exploitation gets rebranded as compassion… this episode is for you.
For many compassionate people, “cage-free” eggs feel like a meaningful step in the right direction. The marketing is powerful: happy hens, open barns, green grass…
And yet if you’re vegan, you likely already know this is just humane washing — and according to a new white paper from PETA, the reality inside so-called “cage-free” systems reveals hens suffer as much and more, in some ways.
Hens are still confined by the tens of thousands in filthy sheds saturated with ammonia and waste. Up to 97% suffer broken bones. Then there’s respiratory disease, infections, blindness, and chronic stress. Male chicks are still ground up alive shortly after hatching because they’re considered economically useless to the egg industry.
Today I’m joined by Amber Canavan, Associate Director of Vegan Campaigns at PETA.
-
why humane labels can actually prolong animal suffering
-
the psychology behind consumers wanting to believe there’s a kind way to exploit animals
-
Amber’s rescued hen Rosemary and the devastating reality of “cage-free” systems
-
how language keeps people disconnected from violence
-
and why the real issue was never the cage itself — but the commodification of living beings.
This is an honest conversation about the gap between perception and reality in the egg industry.
If there’s one thing I hope this conversation reinforces, it’s that the problem was never simply the cage — it’s the commodification of living beings.
“Cage-free” doesn’t liberate hens. It helps an incredibly violent industry feel more emotionally acceptable to compassionate consumers.
I have so much gratitude for to Amber and everyone at PETA for continuing to expose the realities industries desperately want hidden.
And thank you for caring enough to keep looking honestly, even when the truth is uncomfortable.
