In recent months I’ve been struggling with a growing frustrated at the non vegan who declares “I love animals” and yet still eats animals and supports their exploitation in so many other ways too. That might sound overly obvious – and yet – the dishonesty, the in-congruency, the wilful ignorance and selfish, greedy, laziness of the “animal loving animal eating human” riles me worse than the hunter. The dairy farmer. Or perhaps even the psychopath that hates animals and thinks their place on earth is simply to be here as food for us. At least that’s honest.
If you can relate, I think we might have a solution for this growing frustration with the animal loving non vegan.
A book narrated by a cheeky vegan dog – a real dog – and her take on how humans treat animals and how that connects with disease, ecocide and social injustice.
The charming vegan dog sharing her dog’s-eye view on human exploitation of animals is Dori. She’s a white boxer and her partner in book authoring and hauntingly effective truth telling is eco-feminist, animal-rights activist and vegan Margaret (Meg) Hurley.
This book has to be read to truly do it justice. Autobiography, history, and science are woven into Dori’s adventures to reveal and explain the destructive effects of eating animal flesh and secretions on humans and animals, and on the planet. Dori keeps her human family in line, making them question and assess their relationships with animals. The style of writing using idiosyncratic broken sentences and a cross-genre stream-of-consciousness narrative takes the reader along for a journey that will impart brutal, horrific truths and then give timely relief before you turn away as Dori herself bounds off to her next adventure or simply some necessary sniffing and snoozing.
Dori shines a spotlight on human behaviour in a way that is ironic, quirky, funny, sad, maddening, and deadly relevant. Today her human Meg, shares with us more of the inner life of her gorgeous vegan dogs (it’s not just Dori!), and why she felt compelled to take such a unique approach in sharing the urgent message that we are running out of time to take personal action and align our daily actions with our beliefs and Live Vegan.
In this conversation we cover:
- How to get across to the general public, how dire the situation is.
- Dori is one of the select animals non-vegan humans have time for – let’s speak about Carnism.
- Meg and her husband transitioned the dogs to a plant-based diet in collaboration with their vet.
- Othering, how terms like “they” keep groups oppressed.
- Vegan and Non-vegan relationships with loved ones.
And so much more!
Gosh I feel like I need a Dori in my life to call me on my outta control ineffective vegan rants and also my incongruences, as they surely exist.
More-so, it’d just be crazy amazing to have a rescue animal in my life.
If you know someone stuck in the Carnist mindset of: these are the animals I eat AND these are the animals I call friends then I really cannot recommend The Dog Who Ate The Vegetable Garden and Helped Save The Planet enough.
Disclaimer: the first couple of pages my thoughts were “whoa, what’s the go here this writing style (Dori’s voice) is different” and then very early on I was enthralled and so sad to get to the end of the book and say goodbye to Dori and Meg.
