Stephanie Feldstein is the Director of the Population and Sustainability program at the Centre for Biological Diversity, where she leads the Centre’s work to highlight and address threats to endangered species and wild places from human population growth and overconsumption.
She has more than 20 years of experience in animal rescue and advocacy.
In her latest book, The Animal Lover’s Guide to Changing the World
Stephanie shares how one person truly can make a difference in leading a more animal friendly life. I love that while the title of Stephanie’s book is HUGELY optimistic (I can relate to this!) it’s actually amazingly accessible, actionable and empowering. I’d even go so far as to suggest it’s the opposite of my personal tendency towards all or nothing and rather advocates for a start where you are approach. As such there is something for everyone. So no excuses. If you’re an animal lover and if the atrocities inflicted on animals around the world has previously shocked and saddened you into inaction or disillusion then this book (and hopefully this interview!) will show you that you really, truly can change the world for animals.

In this interview we cover:
The importance of compassion for animals, for fellow humans and especially self compassion.
How to be an impactful animal lover day to day – aka Stephanie’s top actions / tips that anyone can implement regardless of time, money, location etc.
Hope, the difference one person can make and the importance of imperfect action over inaction.
Stephanie’s solutions to stay positive when the extent of animal exploitation globally can be so daunting.
What is the belief or habit that Stephanie has changed in the last 5 years that’s had the most positive impact on her life.
Someone Stephanie yet to meet who inspires her from a distance.
Someone at the top of Stephanie’s Vegan wish (i.e. not yet Vegan) list and WHY?
I love such implementable advice! As I mentioned in the chat, each chapter starts with an individual animal and ends with 3 things you can do today. I’ve started with several of Stephanie’s actions including these two that I’m almost embarrassed to share.
I haven’t bought a plastic bottle since Stephanie’s book arrived a couple of months ago. That’s certainly NOT a big “go me!” it’s more that I felt utterly incongruent that only in recent months have I committed to fixing my soda stream (by fix I mean buy a new gas bottle AND new water bottles) and never again buying the 2-3 bottles of sparkling mineral water I used to purchase every single week. We’ve also done away with disposable cups at the gym at my insistence and although a couple of people thought I was being “extreme” enforcing my minuscule efforts to cut down on waste on unsuspecting gym goers… in reality no one has died of dehydration and the vast majority of people now remember to bring their reusable bottles.
The other action I’ve found especially helpful are the 3 questions to ask before your next purchase starting with “Do I really need this?” I’m genuinely saving money and it feels good to not be participating to quite such an extravagant degree in the outta control mass of consumerism. I’m sure I’ve still got a whole lot more pleasure to be enjoyed as a result of more conscious and considered purchases however this action really does appeal to my inner (gosh maybe outer and ever obvious!) control freak.
To get actionable today I’d really love to hear from you? What ONE action that you’ve undertaken recently to help change the world for animals has been of most surprise value to you?
