Friends, you are in for a treat today. I loved this conversation with comedian, screenwriter, podcast host, and author Glen Merzer. Glen has authored or co-authored more than a dozen books with a vegan message. Our primary focus today is Glen’s latest book Food Is Climate: A Response to Al Gore, Bill Gates, Paul Hawken, & The Conventional Narrative on Climate Change, which argues that the only way to reverse climate change is to eliminate animal agriculture and to protect the oceans from industrial fishing.
Dr. Michael Klaper called Food Is Climate “the most important book of the 21st Century” and that is a fair assessment.
In this conversation Glen (who has been vegan for 33 years and vegetarian for almost 2 decades before that) and I discuss, why public figures are so afraid to talk about animal agriculture, how “this is not a battle between science and science it’s a battle between science and culture” and what we can do – must do – to save and heal our planet and ourselves.
In this conversation we cover:
- Glen started his career as a comedian, what is the line he walks between dropping truth-bomb vegan facts and leading more with a lighter, comedic approach?
- As vegans and activists do we need to get better at tackling tough issues with humour and wisdom?
- Glen’s AMAZING book, Food Is Climate and WHY, the only way to reverse climate change is to eliminate animal agriculture and to protect the oceans from industrial fishing.
- The subtitle of Food Is Climate is: A Response to Al Gore, Bill Gates, Paul Hawken, & The Conventional Narrative on Climate Change. Why are public figures, politicians and even most environmentally focused NGO’s afraid to talk about animal agriculture?
- The importance of tress and healthy oceans in drawing down carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
- The carbon opportunity cost of animal agriculture.
- The vague myth of regenerative agriculture. (it’s just an excuse to still eat meat)
- The Yellow Dragon verses The Great Green Wall and why Beijing may one day become unliveable.
- There are steps we can take to positively impact climate change and save our world. How much of the solution comes down to personal responsibility and personal power – beginning with the food on your plate?
If you read one non-fiction book this year, I strongly recommend it be, Food Is Climate. This is genuinely such a high value, impactful book. As an ethical vegan I find the degree to which we exploit animals and the environment both heart-breaking and overwhelming. You likely do too.
The solutions as presented by Food Is Climate are refreshingly simple.
The puzzle pieces fit, or they could fit, in a self perpetuating cycle of health and rejuvenation rather than our broken cycle of waste and destruction, if each of us as powerful and compassionate individuals just decided to: Stop Eating Animals.
