I asked animal rights activist Jessica Nieves to come on the podcast after hearing from previous guest and founding director of The Barnyard Sanctuary, Tamala Lester what an absolute powerhouse, force for good she is!
I was intrigued.
Jessica has a background in Early Childhood Education, is mother to 3 little miracles and has been a grassroots animal rights activist for several years. She is also a dedicated volunteer, as well as the Board Vice President at the Barnyard Sanctuary – her “happy place!”
Jessica seems fearless in her activism. I want to know and share how she manages to hold back or at the least, handle the darkness that accompanies knowing what happens to animals. Knowing we’ve been lied to. Realising most people don’t care enough to change.
In my quest to focus on leading with love and compassion I’ve found myself turning away from some of the horrors we humans inflict on animals. It was that or sacrifice both my sanity and my relationships with non-vegan loved ones.
It does not mean I don’t have HUGE respect for the activists out there on the front line, witnessing the darkness and engaging in conversations that are often frustrating and disappointing. I have even more respect, though I do worry about their psychological well being. I trust you know me well enough to appreciate that is said with only love.
Please enjoy this heartfelt and inspiring conversation with Animal Rights Activist Jessica Nieves about Managing The Darkness That Accompanies Knowing What Happens To Animals.
In this conversation we cover:
- Jessica didn’t grow up vegan or an animal lover.
- A couple of the campaigns Jessica is working on as an animal rights activist:
- Working to ban fur at major retailers.
- Putting an end to horse drawn carriages in Philadelphia.
- There is a darkness that accompanies knowing what happens to animals. How does Jessica handle it?
- Has her approach to activism or handling conversations with loved ones changed?
- We discuss, the need to, “surround myself with certain individuals for my mental well being. And because I connect with them on a different level.”
- What does Jessica wish society taught our kids so far as interacting with animals and the natural world?
- What keeps Jessica motivated in the face of challenges and setbacks?
- Jessica is Board VP at the Barnyard Sanctuary – how can we help them find their forever farm?
I hope you loved that chat as much as I did.
