The stark reality is that humans are eating more meat than ever. That even when made aware of the horrific abuse and environmental destruction caused by traditional animal agriculture, most people will prioritise their personal taste and convenience.
Most people will keep eating animals.
Paul Shapiro is the author of the national bestseller Clean Meat: How Growing Meat Without Animals Will Revolutionize Dinner and the World.
He’s also the CEO of The Better Meat Co., a five-time TEDx speaker, the host of the Business for Good Podcast, and a long-time leader in food sustainability. In 2023, he was named as a Most Admired CEO by the Sacramento Business Journal.
The company Paul co-founded and runs, The Better Meat Co., uses fermentation to turn microbes into meat within hours, creating a far more sustainable and humane method of recreating the meat experience, than raising and slaughtering animals for food.
I love Paul’s vision for a future where meat does not have the detrimental impact on the animals or the planet that is currently does. This chat was an absolute joy.
As you will hear Paul is vegan for the animals and a passionate animal rights activist. Please enjoy this hopeful conversation about the benefits of microbial fungi fermentation to reinvent meat.
In this conversation we cover:
- When Paul first come to understand the limitations and atrocities of traditional animal agriculture.
- Some of the inefficiencies of animal agriculture.
- Global meat demand is going up.
- Recreating the meat experience without animals.
- The Science and Benefits of Clean Meat, especially the advantages of mycoprotein.
- Microbial fungi fermentation: How is it created? What do you feed the fungi?
- What would Paul say to someone who thinks growing meat from cells is, unnatural?
- On expanding our circle of moral concern. Paul has said, “Our generation can be the one” to extend our moral compass, does he think it will be?
- What do vegans need to know about effectively influencing non-vegans?
- The challenges involved in creating and scaling a mission driven / values focused business.
- How does Paul balance the urgency and importance with having a semblance of balance / time for other important things in life?
Those examples that Paul shared about how other exploitative industries “so powerful fall from such great heights to total irrelevance” it’s hopeful right?
I am wishing with all my heart that animal agriculture’s fall to irrelevance is eminent and absolute. This is the time to consider: What will future generations think of our treatment of animals?
The answer could not be more clear.
