Todays conversation is a change of pace to a degree however it also feels relevant and timely. For those of us who become vegan to align our actions with our values it feel like an entirely authentic decision.
Yet then, we all too often slam up against the complexities of relationships with non-vegans. Of being effective and impactful – whether that is as a business owner, an activist or simply as a human wanting to have and maintain respectful relationships with people we love who do not share our vegan values.
This of course relates to veganism and so much more.
Perhaps we feel like we are compromising our values or toning down our authenticity to keep the peace or avoid heated conversations and heart-breaking conflict?
My guest today, Lucy Rowell is all about Impactful Authenticity. In fact, that is both the name of her podcast and her business where she is on a mission to help businesses and leaders break-free of expectations, understand their own unique strengths and passions to increase their success.
Side note: Lucy is vegan and we discuss how vegan business’s can thrive while walking the fine line between not turning off non-vegan majority and not hiding the huge Why behind their vegan business.
In this conversation we cover:
- Lucy envisions a world where everyone can show up authentically. Part of that for her, is living vegan lifestyle.
- “As kids all we can do is be authentic!” what could many of us adults learn from the way we were as kids?
- What does it cost us, in business and in life when we are not living aligned with the person we genuinely believe ourselves to be?
- How vegan business’s can thrive while walking the fine line between not turning off non-vegan majority and not hiding the huge Why behind their vegan business.
- On Lucy’s podcast Impactful Authenticity she asks guests what tip would they give listeners to help them move towards being more authentic. What are some of the best tips?
Of many take aways in that conversation I found it impactful to hear Lucy emphasise the nature of our conflicting values and the need to access and prioritise them.
I remember catching up with dear family friends in New Zealand. For context this was a trip dad and I took together almost a year after our number one person, Mum, died suddenly.
The father of a couple of boys I was best friends with as a pre-teen said something along the lines of: “So Kate, surely your father is the most important thing to you?” More context, we had been discussing the tension created by my vegan ethics and dads need to eat meat at every meal.
I replied, “A vegan world is the most important thing to me.”
Which it is. Because I believe that would positively impact everything and everyone, including my father. And because the unnecessary suffering and destruction of a non-vegan world is so urgent and consequential.
And yet, that response while authentic was also undeniably hurtful and of negative impact so far as my relationship with my father and his receptiveness to even just one plant-based meal a week.
Sometimes I wonder at the things that fly out of my mouth. With reflection, as Lucy shared, I will get better.
