It’s been said that the level of success you will experience will be in direct proportion to the amount of uncertainty you can handle.
Now for someone who loves to eat the same thing for dinner 6 nights a week this was a little unsettling!
As you’ll also have heard a BELIEF doesn’t matter if it’s true or even real, just if it works and as a certainty seeker I’m now finding comfort in believing that I can always count on (in fact rely with Certainty!) that….there will always be uncertainty!
Warped?
In fact this is strangely FREEING. The pressure of always ‘needing to know’ was consuming. I don’t know what every (or any) outcome will be, however I am certain that I’ll come up with the goods.
UNCERTAINTY IS A GIVEN.
CERTAINTY OF SELF CAN BE TOO.
Not only do I waste less energy – I experience less fear.
Ready for some more Warp speed?
How about if the only thing we fear is uncertainty? I stumbled across this on a podcast last week and it resonated. Big time. Try it out with a couple of your fears as I with did mine.
“Fear comes from uncertainty. When we are absolutely certain, whether of our worth or worthlessness, we are almost impervious to fear.” William Congreve.
Fear public speaking? Or is it really the uncertainty of how you’ll go – if you’ll know the answers to the questions – if you’ll forget your info – how the audience will respond to you?
How about approaching the event certain that you’re there to give your very best on the day to the audience and that this is also an opportunity to learn and progress from whatever happens?
Fear birds? I know ‘spiders’ would be more normal (!) …I fear birds, actually I fear the fact that they move very quick and have shape beaks and claws and I’m uncertain as to whether they’re going to suddenly fly straight at me!
Here’s an easy one. Fear giving your fat loss goal your very best shot? Or is the fear really in the uncertainty that you don’t know if or when your hard work will pay off and whether you’ll achieve your goal?
This is where we see how the level of uncertainty you can stand will determine your success – embracing uncertainty let’s you tackle your fears and your fears are holding you back. (OK, occasionally they protect you – like when I shield my face and cross to the other-side of the footpath from that MASSIVE terrifying crow that I know just wants to hurtle like a big black bullet beak first at me just for the fun of it….)
How good if this was as easy done as said? Ok, so I’m down with uncertainty from…Now!
It’s a work in progress for me and I’m truly loving the results so far. In instances where I need a little help I use a tool that let’s me combat uncertainty with certainty. As with any of Tony Robbin’s 6 Core Needs (<= I cover the other 4 here) Uncertainty and Certainty compliment each other. When you are experiencing too much of one it can help to consciously do more of the other. Something that gives me a lot of Certainty is exercise. I know exactly what to expect and also how it will make me feel and look. If exercise doesn’t give you certainty, perhaps an interaction with a loved one does? Or even doing the house-work?
If you’d like to be able to turn to exercise as a resourceful solution in times of uncertainty I’ve got you covered:
This is my Motivation to Exercise Strategy – specifically these are the steps I run through in my mind (and that’s a strategy) that always work and get me the result I want (in this example – to exercise) Now, I just elicited my own strategy for something I do well, however I can apply this strategy to something I don’t do so well yet and it motivates me to get my A into G!
Whatever it is that you do really well, I would recommend breaking down ‘how’ you do it. You may think it ‘just happens’ …if you take the time you will see there are steps…AND this effective strategy can be modeled and used in other areas of your life.
Effective Motivation to Exercise Strategy;
- I think about/tell myself how important this is to my core identity and happiness
- I evaluate what needs to be done
- I think about how good the results will make me feel. RESULT: action!!!
“Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security” John Allen Paulos
….as I said, absolutely freeing and if there’s one thing I seek even more than certainty – it’s FREEDOM.
