Friends, the energy in todays show is joyfully contagious! Sunny Satva is a climate activist, vegan cookbook author, and passionate plant-based educator.
With a background as an engineer, a former nonprofit fundraiser, and co-founder of Kenya’s first vegan restaurant, she brings a rare mix of heart and strategy to the fight for a more sustainable food system.
From her love of Swahili cuisine to her mission of empowering people to eat in alignment with their values, Sunny shows how simple, soulful food can be a tool for climate justice and collective liberation.
In this conversation, we look at how food and climate are connected, the hidden costs of industrial agriculture, and the delicious, nourishing choices that Sunny sees as a bridge between values, culture, and community.
Sunny’s work is rooted in authenticity, resilience, and so much joy—I know you’ll leave this episode feeling inspired and energised.
In this conversation we cover:
- Sunny’s personal turning point in connecting food and climate.
- Beyond carbon emissions—some of the hidden costs of industrial food systems.
- Sunny’s cookbook, Vegan Swahili and the inspiration behind it.
- Experience the tastes of East Africa with Sunny’s fabulous Swahili spice boxes.
- How traditional, local food can be a bridge between cultural heritage and compassionate eating?
- For someone who’s already vegan and wants to go even further for the planet, humanity and animals—what are some powerful, shifts they can make?
- Everyday habits—like how we shop, cook, or store food—that can help reduce our footprint without costing more time or money.
- Sunny talks about soulful nourishment—not just the nutrients on our plate, how we connect with our bodies, communities, and even ancestors.
- Joy as a powerful form of resistance.
If you, or someone you know has ever worried that going vegan might mean less food joy, Sunny is the antidote to that!
As she reminds us: “Every meal is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in,” and I, want that world to be vibrant, compassionate, and purpose-driven rather than profit-driven.
What I love about Sunny is how rare and refreshing it is to meet someone who sees the darkness and huge challenges of our world so clearly, yet chooses to lead with joy while creating change.
I know Sunny through our Skool groups—hers is called Plant Powered Path—and I’ll link to that, along with all the resources she mentioned, in the show notes. Be sure to check out her beautiful new offering, Vegan Swahili—more than a cookbook, it’s a celebration of culture, connection, and conscious living.
Living as descendants of enslaved people for hundreds of years... eating animal products was essentially forced on the Black American community. The shift that we're seeing towards plant-based diets is a reclamation of ancestral wisdom. Share on XSunny’s website: https://vegansunny.com/
