Listening to Catherine Kelaher tell the stories of some of the individual hens she has met since starting NSW Hen Rescue over 10 years ago simply melts my heart in the best possible way.
If someone you know still holds tight to the mistaken belief that hens (pigs – cows – sheep – fish) are personality-void, disposable little parcels of meat put on earth for our taste and convenience this is a chat I wish they could hear.
This is a bitter sweet conversation. Although NSW Hen Rescue has liberated thousands of hens and other factory farmed animals from places of abuse and exploitation, seeing the unique personalities of the animals they save makes it even more painfully apparent just how much suffering is being experienced on a colossal scale globally when every single year trillions – yep with a T – of thinking, feeling individuals are slaughtered.
As Catherine says:
Saving one hen might not change the world, but it will change the world for that one hen. @NSWHenRescue #friendsnotfood #lovehensnoteggs Share on XNSW Hen Rescue: share the stories of those individual animals to help people connect with them and see that like dogs and cats, they deserve our respect and compassion.
In her latest book Saving Animals: A Future Activist’s Guide, Catherine is also sharing the stories of some of the incredible young activists she has met. It’s a lively, interactive, hands-on guide to animal and environmental activism for young people of all ages.
This conversation is an up close and personal look inside the lives of the land animals most persecuted by humans. It’s a little harrowing and also A LOT hopeful as we get to see and even help with the exciting plans Catherine has for a Hen Haven and also get to see the positives changes for animals being made by the next generation of brave and passionate animals rights activists all around the world.
In this conversation we cover:
- Catherine’s becoming vegan story.
- What about free-range farms?
- What does “A Day In The Life” look like for a rescue hen. First, the situation she is leaving. Then, the place she is coming to. Finally, her potential forever home.
- Catherine describes some of the individual hens she gets to interact with and their unique personalities.
- What are hatching projects?
- Saving Animals: A Future Activist’s Guide.
- Some of the incredible young activists Catherine has met.
- Catherine’s dream of a Hen Haven is becoming a reality.
If you love the sound of all the work Catherine is doing you can be a part of it by supporting NSW Hen Rescue financially, with your time or of course by purchasing Saving Animals for the Future Activist’s in your life. NSW Hen Rescue is entirely volunteer run by a small, but dedicated group of vegan, animal activists. I’ll have all the details you need linked up below.
I’m going to close with a quote from one of the activists featured in Saving Animals: Emma Black (14), Wollongong, Australia: “We may be young, but we’re also powerful. People will see us speaking up for animals and will realise that they, too, can make positive changes. Our voices will be heard.”
