If you were in the best shape of your life what would you do?
This is a question I ask myself frequently.
Despite the fact I am currently the happiest I’ve ever been with my body shape – nice to reflect on as another birthday fast approaches – it’s a question that acts as a super useful filter in my decision making process.
=> Skipping the scheduled walk to work on a rainy morning?
…what would ‘best-shape-Kate’ do?
=> Having the vino, the second serve of gorgeous roast dinner AND the creme brûlée to follow?
=> Ordering a side of chips because that salad at lunch was super-crazy-light?
You will never unconsciously meander your way to your best body… or your best health.
Each decision you choose means a similar decision will be even easier to make next time.
The question is: Are you making the decisions that drag you further from the best shape of your life OR creating habits that in time will make staying fit and lean easy and sustainable?
If you’re sick of weight loss being hard and frustrating. Then the way to make it easy on yourself is to act like the people who find it easy.
To Act As If.
I may have the health angle fairly down pat however in other areas of my life (perhaps areas in which you excel) that is certainly not the case!
Creating video content is ‘hard and frustrating’ for me.
Why?
Because it’s not a locked and loaded part of my weekly routine.
THEN, if I do decide to pencil in a time to commit to it, it’ll get the absolute dregs of my time.
Generally Friday afternoon. When I’m less than fresh and aware of all the other little weekly tasks that still haven’t been completed and are much easier (writing a blog post for example).
When my discipline tank is running on close to empty AND when there are a multitude of other more fun things to choose over knuckling down and learning a new skill.
Perhaps this rings a bell so far as the time you may not schedule for meal planning and exercise? If it doesn’t get scheduled it doesn’t get done. Or at least not done consistently enough to get results and subsequently to motivate you to continue doing it.
Or maybe you give exercise the dregs of your time? After work, or when you’ve got no better offer, or saving up a whole week of owed exercise ’till the weekend’ and then getting just a scrape of it done because ‘”the weekend is for fun.”
To act as if means;
=> Prioritising time blocks for your exercise and meal planning.
=> Ensuring those time blocks are quality, not the dregs when you’re tired and low on discipline.
=> Taking the actions you know you need to take, both on the days you feel like it AND on the days you don’t.
If you’re about to give up on the unsustainable and extreme approaches that always leave you resorting back to your comfortable yet ineffective old habits. Then taking the time – having the patience and…
Backing Yourself 100%
…to build sustainable habits is your solution.
Running every aspect of my business – personally – is ‘unsustainable and extreme’ for me.
Why?
Because I have to sacrifice too many other things to do it AND to do it in a less thorough, slower manner than I would like.
THEN, I get impatient and slip back to my old and comfortably ineffective habits. Perhaps I’ll fight fires rather than be proactive or just maintain status quo rather than pushing to the next level.
Again, this could mirror your approach to eating and exercising?
Backing Yourself 100% to build sustainable habits means;
=> Starting with an approach that can fit congruently into your lifestyle now and for years to come.
=> Sticking with it for as long as it takes.
=> Focusing on each positive reference point, each single step forward, rather than giving yourself grief for what you haven’t achieved yet or how long it’s taking.
It’s non-sexy, yet honest advice.
It works.
