Years working as a personal trainer along side colleagues in fantastic shape (not All by a long shot) we’ll focus on those that are a perfect reflection of ‘walking the talk’ …has taught me that your body is very definitely not a matter of lucky genetics, a metabolism that is naturally in overdrive or even a freakish desire to train rain or shine.
People who are ‘great shape’ whatEVER that is…are not blessed.
They’re not better. They’re just doing things differently.
What they have learnt to do – more so what they have learnt to consistently Think and Believe you can learn as well.
Of course there are those ‘lucky’ few genetic freaks. The chicks who did half as much as me and ate only fairly well and got incredibly lean and cut in a matter of weeks. However much fun they are to train they are VERY few and far between…AND if they took some time off they’d come back looking like they’d swallowed a sheep…easy come easy go!
It’s the same as those super bright kids at school. The ones who didn’t study and still blitzed it. All well and good for a while but WOW did they struggle later when they did actually had to knuckle down to learn a completely new skill.
To say something carries a genetic component does not make it unchangeable. So eradicate that old excuse right now.
So let’s touch on self discipline. The ability to do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not…AND having the strength of character to follow through on a resolution long after the initial enthusiasm has past.
It certainly plays a role.
However it’s often said that imagination will always win out over self discipline alone.
Imagine how good the double fudge chocolate cake tastes?
Imagine the way you’ll feel when your partner or random strangers double take when they notice you strutting past in that hot new pair of jeans (!) the choice is yours…
Imagination is the creator of all our problems, how many problems have you battled in your mind that never eventuated?…AND it can also be the solution to all our problems. How often has a unique perspective, be it yours or from someone else, provided the solution when you thought you were completely stuck?
Some of the tactics favoured by those who just seem to stay in fantastic shape naturally and easily:
=> Always focus on what is best for your body LONG TERM, not what feels best right now. You know when you’re looking for an excuse. Be at cause. This is of course the law of sowing and reaping at play. Be prepared to pay the full price for success in advance. A useful question to ask if you are facing indecision regarding your training/nutrition is:
“What would a person who has the health and body I want do in this situation?”
=> Make your imagination your friend not foe. Switch from the short-term instant gratification LAZY mindset of I’ll-just-hit-the-snooze-and-it’ll-be-oh-so-lovely-and-snuggly-Right-Now…by choosing to imagine instead how achieving your goal will feel Long Term.
Of course you have to be crystal on your Goal first.
Once you are, ask yourself: “For what purpose do I want this? What will this mean to me and those I love – to my ideal life?”
=> Have the discipline to choose the daily and weekly actions that you can commit to consistently. It really is true the fairly good plan you stick to will out-perform the perfect plan you quit. It’ll even out-perform the good plan you’re INconsistent with. True. If your goal is to get to your personal ‘great shape’ or ‘ideal health’ and you also want to KEEP IT LONG TERM, well that absolutely-100%-zero-doubt-totally-4sure means you’re going to need a plan that you can stick to long term.
So, it’s not actually even a plan. Yep, you guessed it….
It’s. A. Lifestyle.
AND you’re got to Love it. The great and encouraging thing is…the small consistent steps you take just One Day At A Time…those tiny little actions that with consistency lead to huge results…sneak up on you in another way.
You’ll find yourself enjoying things – activities – foods – thoughts, that you’d never expected to. The Lifestyle will sneak up on you, till it’s yours and you love it and healthy just ‘happens’ naturally and easily. However. The sneak up Only happens when you apply your ‘Focus’, your ‘Imagination’ and your ‘Discipline’ tactics CONSISTENTLY!
